Purpose

The purpose of a listserv is to allow an individual to send one email, and have it broadcasted to all the members of the list at one time with no further effort.  The nature of the listserv furthermore encourages discussion between members of the list.  It allows for fast dissemination of information to all members.

Benefits

Essentially the items listed under "purpose" could also be consider benefits.  So the one main benefit not noted yet is the fact that if we could get everyone on the list with an active email account, we could save money and time.

We could save money on mailings to the membership through the post office.  We don't have very much money to spend each year, and a large part of it goes to postage.  I don't mean to sound like I'm discounting the value of the membership, because I'm certainly not.  If we could get the information in the newsletters and flyers distributed to our membership in a timely fashion via the listserv and/or emails, we could save the money now spent for printing, labels, and postage for other things.

This list is free to the Society, and it is free to the people who join the list.  Yahoo is able to do this because they show ads on the sides of the screens.  These generally are not "pop ups," but static ads merely lining the sides of the screen.  If you are a frequent computer user, I'm sure you have learned how to ignore most of them.

How to Sign Up

First of all, you will need an email account somewhere.  You will use this to sign up with the list.  This is the address to which all messages from the listserv will go.

Next, you will go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kysocietyaia to start the process.  All you need do is follow the instructions after you click "join this group" that is located on this screen.  It will walk you through the steps one by one.

You do have to set up an "account" with Yahoo.  This does not mean you have to have their email.  It's merely an account on their server so that your User ID and password will be recognized should you return to this site.  There will also be files on this site that will be protected except from members of this listserv.  Only members of AIA-Kentucky Society will be approved to join this list.  Members who lapse their membership will also be removed from the list.

This site is moderated by John Fischer, General Secretary.  That means that no one can join without his approval.  If you are not a current member of AIA, you will not be allowed to join.  Secondly, moderated means that no message goes out to the membership without approval by John.  So spam will not be allowed to pass on to the members, nor will inappropriate comments.

Please don't take this last sentence to mean censorship.  If John believes something is inappropriate for the list, he will return it to the sender with his concerns fully explained.  We will be having members of all ages on this list, and we must operate with a certain level of decorum.

Sending and receiving emails

Once you have joined the listserv, all that remains is sending and receiving emails to and from the list.  You will use your regular email program to do this, just as if you were sending it to a friend.  The only difference is that this email will go to the list, and everyone on the list will receive it.  So you compose the message just like normal.

To send a message to the list, you will use the following email address:

kysocietyaia@yahoogroups.com

You can also join the list by sending an email to following address rather than visiting the above web site:

kysocietyaia-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Likewise, you can always get off the list by sending an email to the following address:

kysocietyaia-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

If you have a concern and you want to write to John about the list, you can always send an email to the following address.  It will only be seen by John.

kysocietyaia-owner@yahoogroups.com

If you receive a message from the list and you want to reply to it, you can use the "reply" button.  Just make sure that it was in fact from the list.  Otherwise, it will go back to whomever sent it.  If the message did not come from the list, all you have to do is originate a new message addressed to the list.

Please note that due to the fact that this is a moderated list, your message to the list will not post immediately.  I will review the incoming messages daily, and forward them for posting.  You may not see your message until the next day.  So don't get concerned that it didn't get to the list for at least 24 hours.  Please remember that I'm a volunteer, and not a paid employee with this list as my job.  I'll do the best I can.  That's all I can offer.

This list is for fun and information.  Please use it.  It will get better as the number of participants grow.  Don't hesitate to contact me if you have trouble getting on the list.
