This page is devoted to news being made by our members, activities of the society, and other things that just might be of interest to our membership. While we aren't going to be selling Gen-su knives or Vege-matics on this page, I do believe it's important to note new books being published by our membership, articles being published, research projects, awards and honors, etc. So please let me know about them. The first big item of news is that we now have a website. Right now Jonathan Hamby is the webmaster (hamby1@gmail.com), but the job is open to anyone who would like to take it on. This will be an on-going job to further develop this site with the aid of suggestions and specific recommendations from our membership. Don't be shy in sharing your thoughts and criticisms. The society now has its own listserv through the auspices of Yahoo. Many of you will be familiar with this, and will know how to use it and recognize the benefit that it can have for our statewide membership. You will notice in the links column that there is a page devoted to the listserv. This explains its purpose, how it works, and how to get signed in on it. John Fischer is currently the moderator, and rest assured that all messages coming through this have to be approved by him. So no spam can possibly get through. So don't let that worry you about signing up. Please check out the Listserv page, and get signed up today! In fact, if everyone of our members had a working email address, all newsletters now being printed and mailed could be sent by email. This would save a huge portion of our yearly budget for other programs such as speakers or activities. The Teaching Company has just published a new course by our member, John R. Hale, as part of The Great Courses series. It is entitled "Classical Archaeology of Ancient Greece and Rome," and is comprised of 36 one-half hour lessons on DVD. For more information you can logon to www.TEACH12.com, or call 1.800.832.2412. Not only do you get John teaching on camera, but he's backed up by hundreds of beautiful photographs. The Kentucky Society now has its own domain name. We are www.kyarchaeology.com. That's what you had to logon to to get to this web site. I hope you'll use it often to visit this website, and share your comments about how to make it better. Most member-based organizations like ours have items available for the membership to purchase to show their allegiance to the organization. To that end, we are now having a contest to get our membership to develop a logo for the Kentucky Society. First thoughts have been toward having T-shirts printed with the logo. Not only would they be fun to wear, they would help in advertising for new members and could possibly become a means by which the society could raise money for our local programs and activities. Don't worry about being an artist. Give us a rough draft of your ideas. Please send them to John E. Fischer at fischerj@wabash.edu.
Don't forget about the national AIA Conference in Philadelphia on 8-12 January 2009. Reservations for both the conference and accommodations are being taken at this time. Likewise, don't forget about your membership discount for this. The Executive Committee has been looking into applying
for a non-profit status (501.c.3) for our organization. In doing
so, the Committee has recognized a need to update the current
Constitution and Bylaws of the Society. A committee has been
assigned to draft a proposed set for your consideration and approval.
So when those are done, they will be published on this web site so that
you can compare the old with the new. We will then ask you to vote
on accepting the new. More information will follow as this process
is furthered. Finally, the non-profit status will allow the
Society to receive monetary contributions that will be tax deductible to
the giver and can be used to further our mission for archaeology
throughout the commonwealth.
